Only 5 ingredients. That's right. Using a box of yellow cake mix, eggs, cream cheese, butter and powdered sugar, you get this delicious dessert, which in fact is the same recipe as Ms. Paula Deen's Gooey Butter Cake, apart from she adds an additional stick of butter!
You can make it lemon-flavored too by simply using a lemon cake mix instead. It's that easy and you won't be disappointed. It's a favorite Southern tailgate treat that's a genuine crowd pleaser and disappears pretty rapidly!

HOW TO MAKE BUTTER CAKE CHESS SQUARES
Preparation time: 8 minutes
Cook time: 40-50 minutes
Servings: 24
Ingredients:
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 Cup (1 stick) butter, melted
- 4 Cups (1 lb) powdered sugar
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 300 and spray a 9×13 dish with cooking spray.
- Mingle cake mix, melted butter and one egg to a soft dough. Press into the bottom of the pan.
- Mingle powdered sugar, softened cream cheese and remaining two eggs until smooth, about 1-2 mins. Pour on top of the crust.
- Bake at 300 for 40-50 minutes until top is gancienten brown.
Notes:
- Chocolate Chess Bars: Employ a chocolate satan's food cake mix or fudge cake mix for the cake layer and add 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa to the cream cheese mixture along with a small vanilla, whether you like.
- Lemon Chess Squares: Add the juice and zest of one lemon to the cream cheese mixture.
